Date: 12/21/2010

The National Meat Institute has been awarded ANII’s NOVA Prize for Innovation in the Public Interest category thanks to its Electronic Information System for the Meat Industry – Black Boxes.

The traceability system and the black boxes boosted by the National Meat Institute are the greatest innovation in the public sector in recent years.

Thanks to the boost given by public and private institutions, Uruguay has a system that ensures food safety from farm to table, as stated by INAC’s President Alfredo Fratti on receiving the award.

Awards were granted to the most outstanding projects of the industry and the public activity based on their innovation, social impact, sustainable development and social effect.

Edgardo Rubianes, President of ANII, highlighted the motivating character of this prize and encouraged the private sector to share risks on investing in innovation. He said that one of ANII's duties is to promote that process and therefore, the Institution is ready to share the risk entailed in it.

54 candidates applied in the 8 categories opened for the prize, a number of candidates that surpassed expectations for the first edition, since this was the first time an award of these characteristics was granted.

Applicants were evaluated by an Advisors Committee composed of expert members from organizing institutions.

The prize was awarded to the following categories: Industry Innovation, Services Innovation, Exporters Innovation, Agroindustrial Innovation, ICTs Innovation, Innovative Enterprise, Public Interest Innovation, Humane and Local Development Innovation.
