One third of Uruguay's meat production goes for the domestic market.

Fecha: 22/06/2011

Uruguay has reached a meat consumption level similar to those of developed countries (over 90 kg/person/year) despite its medium level income, as stated during the Conclusions of the Meat Forum regarding the domestic market.

The composition of consumption shows the importance of beef and sheep meat (over 60 kg) compared to that of poultry and pig meat (over 30 kg), which has increased both in quantity and in variety of commercial presentations.

Considered individually, Uruguay demands almost 200 thousand ton cw, thus being the main market for our beef.

This explains why big companies are interested in the domestic market: 80 % of the domestic supply comes from companies that are also exporters, and the remaining 20 % is supplied by plants that only sell their products in the domestic market.
