High Quality Beef

Date: 08/26/2011

The European Commission has published the communication by which our country is authorized to access the import tariff quota for high-quality beef, established for animals fed with grains for at least the last 100 days before slaughter.

The President of INAC stated that this is one more commercial opportunity for Uruguay in the world market.

Commission Regulation (EC) 620/2009 of the European Union allows for Uruguayan beef produced in feedlots to compete with that of other four countries for a 20,000 ton 0% tariff quota until July 2012, which as of that date is to rise to 45,000 ton.

Importers will be able to divide the quota as they please among Australia, New Zealand, Canada, United States and Uruguay.

The President of INAC, Mr. Alfredo Fratti, said to “El País” that “Yet, it is good news” and although it remains to be seen how much of this 20,000-ton quota will be used by Uruguay, he thinks “it will be a significant portion. The question is whether the effect of this will be transferred to the other agricultural sectors.”
